Red light tickets are going up at a Melbourne street corner

A man is in a wheelchair after being hit by a red light while crossing the street on the Gold Coast.

The incident happened at the intersection of King George Street and Brunswick Street in the CBD.

The man is said to have been hit by the car as he crossed the road and he was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

A number of red light cameras have been installed across the country to make drivers pay for violations.

Police said a woman, who was also in the car, was injured.

The red light camera is being operated by the Victoria Police and will last until the end of the year.
