New York (AP) New York Mets star pitcher Bartolo Colon, who is on the verge of a season-ending shoulder injury, will be among those eligible to start in the World Baseball Classic starting Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Colon, 29, is scheduled to make his second start in two weeks and will start against the Dodgers after suffering the injury while batting.
“I’ll be ready to go,” Colon said.
“Obviously, I’m not going to be able to catch up on the baseballs or anything like that, but it’s something that’s going to go away from me soon enough.
Colon, a six-time All-Star who was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 2013, has started every game this season and batted .302 with 17 homers and 45 RBIs. “
If it doesn’t, it’s just going to make it more of a grind for us.”
Colon, a six-time All-Star who was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 2013, has started every game this season and batted .302 with 17 homers and 45 RBIs.
His .926 OPS ranks second in the majors.
The Mets won the National League East in 2016 and have since won the American league pennant and the World Championship.
They lost to the Los Angels in six games in the NLCS in 2018.
Colon is one of the top prospects in the game and has made a case for a spot on the Mets’ World Series roster this spring.
“It’s going down to the wire,” Colon told reporters.
“We’re hoping to get back on the winning track.
If not, I’ll be out of here.”
A Mets fan stands on the steps of the New York Stock Exchange, where Colon and fellow players like Zack Wheeler and Justin Upton are trading stocks.
The New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs both are set to play in the tournament, which is being hosted by the United States and Canada, starting Wednesday.
